Miami Central, ranking 5th in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings, knew that they had to step their all-around game for their Class 6A semifinal match against Daytona Beach Mainland after losing running back Joseph Yearby to a fractured fibula. The Rockets’ tag team of Yearby and Dalvin Cook has run through defenses all season.
With only Cook to lead the running back corps in Friday’s game, other players needed to step up. Rising to the occasion, Central commanded a smooth 28-15 victory over the Buccaneers.
Quarterback Keith Reed completed 12 of 23 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns, adding on a rushing touchdown of his own. All three of Reed’s touchdown passes were to Da’vante Phillips, who finished with eight catches for 211 yards.
This victory sends Central to their fourth consecutive Class 6A championship game, a Miami-Dade County record, against Seffner Armwood. A win will bring the Rockets their second consecutive championship and third in four years.
Still, it will not be easy, for Armwood is the team that defeated Central two years ago. The two teams meet on Saturday, December 14 with a 1:00p kickoff.
